Submit

If you're here to submit something, that's great! Submitting content makes Smiley Helper a better web design site, gives you a place to publish your work, and gives your website free advertising if you have one.

Note: to submit graphics, follow the same process but just upload and add the graphics to a post (with a title [Type of Graphic] Submission) and click the Submit Button. You don't need an excerpt, post tags, or a category. :) If accepted, I will add your graphics to their respective page and delete your post.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to submit your tutorial:

  • 1. First, you'll need to register for an account with our wordpress so you can get an author page and be credited for your work.
  • 2. Once you log in, you'll see these links on the side of the screen:

Hover your mouse over the Posts link, click on the arrow that appears on right side of the button, then click Add New.

  • 3. Here is what the Add New Post screen should look like:

  • Title (Name of Post) is pretty self-explanatory. Just come up with a short, catchy name for your tutorial. It should be unique within its category (i.e. you can have 'Sparkle Text' in Gimp and Photoshop, but not two 'Sparkle Text's both in Gimp).
  • Content is where you put the actual tutorial with steps and images. Here is the format:
    1. Step goes here, number is not bolded, one space after the number.<br /><br />

    <img src="http://smileyhelper.com/content/images/IMAGENAME.gif,.jpg, or .png" alt="" /><br /><br />

    2. Step two, and so on.<br /><br />

For the images, click on Media in the sidebar and then click on Add New to upload an image.

The beginning of the url will always be the same (http://smileyhelper.com/content/images/), but replace IMAGENAME with what you named the file (such as 'gimpglowtut1.gif'). The name should be unique, so you might want to include part or all of the tutorial name in it.

  • Excerpt is where we put the image preview and title and description if your tutorial is accepted. You don’t need to worry about this except for copying and pasting this code there:
    <div style="float: left; margin-right: 20px;"><a class="preview"><img src="http://smileyhelper.com/content/images/p.gif" alt="" /></a></div><div style="align: left; padding-top: 65px;"></div>
  • Post Tags are how we categorize tutorials within a category.

Click on 'Choose from the most used tags in Post Tags' and choose from one of these, depending on what your tutorial is about: Normal Tutorials, Project Tutorials, Layout Tutorials, Icon Tutorials, and Picture Effects. If you aren't sure, look at the existing tutorials to see what tags they have.

  • Categories are where the tutorial goes. Check only 1 box from the following (you don't need to check 'Tutorials'): Adobe Photoshop, Articles, Gimp, MS Paint, Paint.NET, Paint Shop Pro, PhotoFiltre, or Sumo Paint.
  • Submit Button is what you click when you're completely done and want the tutorial to be put up for review! If you aren't done but want to save, click on Save Draft.
  • Tips for better tutorials:

    - It should be 100% your creation; no stealing or rewriting other tutorials.
    - It should be something we don't already have.
    - There should be a picture for most steps.
    - Images should be 600 x 600 pixels or smaller and without borders, saved as .gifs, .jpgs, or .pngs and compressed in size (in Photoshop you go to File- Save For Web).
    - Proper punctuation (periods at the end of sentences, capitalization..) and spell checked.
    - Watermarks that say "smileyhelper.com" in a corners on each image to prevent stealing. They should be small and low in opacity.
    - By submitting a tutorial, if we accept it you are giving all rights to the tutorial to us. This means we can do whatever we want with the tutorial, and also means you can't put the tutorial on your own site.
    - All the images, brushes, and resources used in your tutorials should be from Smiley Helper. Exceptions: fonts don't have to be from us and stock photos can be from sxc.hu (but you should credit them in the tutorial).

If we accept your tutorial, we will respond within a week by publishing it on our site. :)
